Learning Log 7

The play Romeo and Juliet is very touching. To prepare for this play, the whole group used a lot of our time to practice for it. I feel that we did pretty well for this assignment, although there's some mistakes here and there, like we laughed when we are not supposed to and forgetting our lines. We do faced problems along the way, but we over come then one by one. In all, we gave everything that we got and the time that we used to practice has paid off. Group 3 yeah!

Learning Log 6

Literary Devices is an important step to successfully understand an
unseen text, because without them, we wouldn't be able to comprehend
what the text is trying to convey to the reader. They are also very interesting
as the literary devices gives us an idea of how the character looks like, the
character's actions and their feelings. Example-"whining like a kitten"
; which is a simile, means the author probably wishes to emphasize the character's
small physique and dependent nature. Her whining suggests her persistence
in seeking the attention she needs, just like a kitten seeking attention from her
mother. I think that the literary device, oxymoron, is the most interesting among
all the other literary device as they are made up of two contradicting words which
we have to make sense out of it. Its like "pretty ugly" means ugly :P

Learning Log 5

Actually, dealing an unseen is easy, provided that they know the technique to tackle
them. There is nothing special about an unseen, and we should approach them in the same
way we would do with any piece of prose or poem. It is important to read the unseen three times.
The first time-to read the whole unseen without stopping. The second time-read it again. Only this
time round, pick out words and phrases that are difficult to understand or seem interesting. Try to
guess the meaning of the word if we really don't know. The third time-once we have understood the
unseen, read it again with feelings and make short notes here and there, this way, when we refer
back to the unseen to answer the questions, we can find our answer quickly. Always have the 4Ws1H
in your mind when making the short notes. They are also very important if one wants to understand
the unseen like the back of your hand.

Essay tests the following skills:
1) the ability to critique and the text while displaying keen sensitivity to the techniques used
2) the ability to communicate your argument coherently to the examiner through clear writing and effective
organization
It is good to start the essay right to the point. E.g. if the question asks "what is our impression of character X?,
your first sentence should read, "My impression of character X is..." Also, quoting from your evidence 'add
value' to the point we have made.

Learning Log 4

On the day of the performance, I had fun! And I guess that all of us did too! I wore a garbage bag and a witch hat. Although I did not put on any make ups, I think that is not a very serious matter.

Well, up on stage, I made some mistake. When Kae Chuan said "Where shall we three meet again?", I made a paused! Where it was a really obvious one! I thought that he said the wrong lines, but I was the one who made the mistake. I remembered that Yu Han's group had forgotted some lines too, which I think that it was a waste.

It was then I find out that how difficult an acting job is. I think that we must be more expressive and never ever forget our lines!!!!! We must also put in more effort in our costumes:)

Leraning Log 3

In Macbeth Act 1 Scene 1, i will be playing the role as witch 3. It has the least number of lines and i guess it would be the easiest to act on among the 3. Haha. To score well in this play, i have this following plan; and that is to speak in a deep crooked voice while projecting it!

Act 1 Scene 2 was to learn about the different definitions for the different phrases in the passage. For example, 'like valor's minion' means a person with courage and determination. We are able to understand the 'old text' as the 'new text' is just beside it. Also, with Mrs Woo's explaination, it had definitely help us a lot.

The group discussion is fun as we had a chance to read each other's ideas. We passed our papers around. Everyone had different ideas as everyone think differently

Learning Log 2

People have good and bad sides, and I think so are Witches. ‘Witches are bad guys’; I guess this would be a stereotype? Honestly, we claim them to be evil just because of their looks or their crooked voices? That is so wrong. Some witches have healing properties, and that is a good thing. It’s up to them whether to be good or bad. They have magical powers which can be used to help people or caused destruction! Moreover, they are humans too—it’s just that they are different; they know MAGIC!

When some of the classmates went up to read Macbeth, they are so funny! Some read in high pitch while some read in low pitch. I think guys would prefer to read in low pitch as some of us would have experienced ‘voice break’. Also, some laughed when they presented it!! I understand why they laugh as I mentioned earlier, it’s very hilarious!

The superstition part is really wow! I don’t even know that there were such superstitions! It really ‘enhance’ on my general knowledge—preventing me from doing the wrong things at some situations like never allow a black cat to walk across your path as it would bring you bad luck!

During the group discussion, we just rotate our paper around. We got a chance to read each others superstitions. Friday the 13th is the most well known superstition (I guess) as most of us would have heard of this superstition even before this research.
